How Many Times Should I Wash My Hair Per Week?

I get asked this question countless times during the course of my day.  There are several different opinions on this subject.  Here are some things to consider before you lather up each day.

Your hair type is the first thing that I would look at when discussing how often you should be washing.  If your hair is fine, thin, and short, you are probably going to want to shampoo more often than if you have course, thick, and long.  Curly hair needs more moisture to stay healthy than straight hair.  While I don't often recommend washing daily, I understand that many people don't feel clean unless they do.

If you wash your hair daily, and would like to try going longer between cleansing, you need to use shampoo and conditioner that rinses clean, and keeps your scalp healthy.  (Ask your stylist for some recommendations.)  Start with an every other day schedule at first, and then try skipping a second day after a few weeks.

My personal routine is something like this:
Day 1  Wash, Condition, Style usually smooth
Day 2  Mist with B&b Tonic Lotion, Style- usually curly
Day 3 Mist with B&b Tonic Lotion, Style- usually up
Day 4 Start the routine over again!

By using the Tonic Lotion, I don't have to reapply any styling products, other than hair spray.  It "reactivates" any products that I originally put on from Day 1.  By washing every three days, I am saving time and money! Try it, you can too!

I had this "how often should I wash my hair" conversation with my neighbor (who I adore).  A few days later she yelled from across the street- "You should be so proud of me!  I haven't showered in three days!!"   I laughed and yelled back- "NO!  You still have to shower!  You just don't need to wash your hair!"

Let's Get Ready for School!

When I was a kid, the end of summer was such a wonderful time of year for me.  By August, I had enough of summer, and I couldn't wait to go shopping for all of my school supplies, new clothes, and  (my favorite part!) a "back to school hair cut".  It seems like this "ritual" has endured many years, and again this year it will be a part of many families routine.  Here's a few helpful hints to make your day with your kiddos more fun.

Use this time to spend one on one time with your child. If you have multiple kids take them separately so you don't have bickering between the children, and you can really focus on each of the kids personal style and needs. I realize this isn't always practical, but if you can finagle it, it's worth it!

This is a good time to get into personal hygiene issues with your kids as well, and sometimes getting your hair stylist involved is a good "third party" resource. We can talk about issues like, skin care and acne issues and how to wash and style your hair. If your kids are starting to wear make up, or need some help with it, schedule an appointment for a "make up lesson".

If your child wants a completely new "look", search for pictures prior to coming to the salon, or get to your appointment early so you can page through some books before your appointment.  If they have really fine straight hair, and they want really curly, full wild hair for their "new look" take them down a notch before their appointment so they aren't disappointed when they don't look like Miley Sirus when they leave.

Summer Trends 2010

Interested in keeping up with fashion this summer? Look no further! Here are a few great ideas to keep you current. Fabric colors are light, pastels, and tans. Flirty and girly, lots of lace, ruffles, and sheer fabrics or fabrics with "cut outs" will be seen this season. Shoes are more feminine, flats, open toe wingbacks, printed pumps, and ultra-high platforms. Check out 100 favorite shoes for spring to get some fun ideas!

To give your hair sexy, salty, sun-dried, windswept styles- whenever, wherever, try using our Bumble and bumble Surf Spray this season. If you want to get really trendy, have your stylist add a heavy fringe to change your look! In the heat, remember to use Aveda's new Damage Remedy Daily Leave In Treatment. It's a leave in conditioning treatment that you can wear every day. It instantly repairs damaged hair, helps protect from heat styling, and helps prevent further damage- why wouldn't you love this product!

Keep your make-up light, try using a bronzer or self tanner instead of getting a tan this year! Use your sunscrean to prevent sun damage! If you have abused Mr. Sun in the past, you should try a series of Glycolic Peels. It's a technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin using a chemical solution that causes the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel off. The regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Call either salon for details.

North West, And North East

For those of you that still haven't heard, we decided to open a SECOND location in North East Rochester. Our decision came rather quickly, and has been an amazing adventure. All of our stylists were given a choice as to which salon they would like to work at, in an unpredictable fashion, the two salons opened with 17 stylists, 9 at NW, and 8 at NE. Our staff has been incredible, the transition has had it's bumps, but all in all we can call our first 3 months with two locations a success. Here is a list of stylists, and where they currently work:

North West Studio:

Alison, Andrea, Christi, Mandy, Mariah, Mary, Pam, Roberta, and Theresa.

North East Studio:

Heather, Julie, Katie, Loree, Lori, Molly, Patrick, and Sara.

Breast Cancer Conscious Make Up.

We just got the new Aveda make up in at our North East Studio. Honestly, it felt like it took forever for Aveda to re-formulate it's original make up, repackage, get a new unit, and ship it to us.  It was definitely worth the wait!
Aveda decided to be the first US company to create a paraben free make up line.  I had no clue what this meant, or why I would want to use this instead of something else.  I found out that parabens are a preservative that are found in most cosmetics.  Although they are an effective preservative, they have been found in breast cancer tumors.  If you want to read more on the parabens, and what the  FDA  thinks about them, click on the link.  When I heard that they were actually finding parabens in breast cancer tumors, that was enough for me to switch all of my make up over to the new line.  I have to say, I haven't noticed any difference in the performance of the product.  The colors are great, it feels wonderful on my skin, and my clients are loving it!  My thanks and appreciation go out to Aveda, for caring enough to take the parabens out of their make up so that they KNOW it's safe for us to use.
